Abstract (English)
This study examined the discourse of prayers among Evangelical Christians both in online and live contexts. Using the deictic classifications of Huang (2007) in Pragmatics, this research adapted Bühler’s (1934;1965 as cited in Jarbou, 2010; Stukenbrock, 2014; Hanks, 2017) Deixis am Phantasma (deixis in the imagination) to identify the deictic expressions used by the ECs, to describe the manner by which deictic expressions reflect distance and create the space in the context of prayers, and to identify the attributes the ECs embody in relation to the distance reflected and the space created in the context of prayers. Using a combination of quasi-quantitative and qualitative research designs, this study identified three salient themes – needs, forgiveness and sin, and the Bible and Jesus Christ’s return – that pointed to several findings resulting in the creation of a taxonomy of the Tagalog deictic expressions. Two other findings – one on the imagined space which supports Bühler’s (1934, 1965) notion of Deixis am Phantasma, and the other, perceived distance, aligned with Davoli, et.al. (2012) – revealed that the ECs assume various stances when praying – as themselves (i.e. as God’s children, as sinners, or as obedient followers), as God Himself Who is omniscient and omnipresent, or as other people. In conclusion, this study has implications for pragmatics as it builds on existing notions of deixis.
