Abstract (English)

This research explored posttraumatic growth (PTG) among Filipino college students exposed to multiple traumatic events. Using a sequential explanatory mixed-methods design, the research investigated both PTG outcomes and the psychological processes through which growth unfolds after trauma, with particular attention to culturally embedded expressions of meaning making and hope involved in processing trauma. Study 1 examined the extent to which cognitive processing of trauma and locus of hope predicted PTG. Results from 1,775 college students aged 18–24 who had experienced two or more traumatic events showed that positive cognitive restructuring, acceptance, internal locus of hope (LOH), external-peers LOH, and external-spiritual LOH predicted PTG. Moreover, external-spiritual LOH negatively moderated the relationship between positive cognitive restructuring and PTG. Study 2 explored what cognitive processing strategies were employed and how locus of hope unfolded in the process of posttraumatic growth. Fourteen participants with the highest PTG and LOH levels were interviewed. Reflexive thematic analysis revealed themes describing growth outcomes connected to self, others, and God, various strategies used to process trauma, as well as the mechanisms through which various LOH dimensions are associated with PTG. These findings underscore the importance of culturally attuned, growth-oriented, and hope-based perspectives in trauma-informed care for Filipino emerging adults.

Sinaliksik sa pag-aaral na ito ang posttraumatic growth (PTG) sa mga Pilipinong mag-aaral sa kolehiyo na nakaranas ng higit sa isang traumatikong pangyayari. Gamit ang sequential explanatory mixed-methods design, sinuri ang parehong mga kinalabasan ng PTG at ang mga sikolohikal na prosesong nag-aambag sa pag-unlad matapos ang trauma. Binigyang-pansin din ng pag-aaral ang mga paraang nakaugat sa kulturang Pilipino sa pagbuo ng kahulugan at pag-asa bilang mahahalagang bahagi ng pagproseso ng mga traumatikong karanasan.

Sa Pag-aaral 1, sinuri kung hanggang saan inaasahan ang PTG batay sa cognitive processing of trauma at locus of hope. Batay sa datos mula sa 1,775 mag-aaral sa kolehiyo na may edad 18–24 at nakaranas ng dalawa o higit pang traumatikong pangyayari, natuklasang ang positive cognitive restructuring, acceptance, internal locus of hope (LOH), external-peers LOH, at external-spiritual LOH ay makabuluhang nakahula sa PTG. Natuklasan din na ang external-spiritual LOH ay may negatibong moderating effect sa ugnayan sa pagitan ng positive cognitive restructuring at PTG.

Sa Pag-aaral 2, sinaliksik ang mga estratehiyang ginagamit ng mga kalahok sa pagproseso ng trauma at kung paano gumaganap ang locus of hope sa proseso ng posttraumatic growth. Kinapanayam ang labing-apat na kalahok na may pinakamataas na antas ng PTG at LOH. Sa pamamagitan ng reflexive thematic analysis, lumitaw ang mga temang naglalarawan sa mga anyo ng paglago na kaugnay ng sarili, kapwa, at Diyos; sa iba't ibang estratehiyang ginagamit upang maproseso at mabigyang-kahulugan ang trauma; at sa mga mekanismong nagpapaliwanag kung paano nauugnay ang iba't ibang dimensyon ng locus of hope sa PTG.

Sa kabuuan, binibigyang-diin ng mga natuklasan ang kahalagahan ng mga pamamaraang sensitibo sa kulturang Pilipino, nakatuon sa posibilidad ng paglago, at kumikilala sa mahalagang papel ng pag-asa sa trauma-informed care para sa mga Pilipinong nasa yugto ng emerging adulthood.
