Abstract (English)
The emerging adults are the future of our workforce. The study aimed to contribute to counseling psychology by providing age and context-specific interventions to help emerging adults respond to work tasks, transitions, and traumas. This research examined the effect of the career shock that the COVID-19 pandemic brought on the lives of emerging adult nurses (EANs) using the Career Construction Model of Adaptation (CCMA) by Savickas and Porfeli (1997, 2012). Using Mixed Methods Case Study (MMCS), this research employed two subparts: (1) quantitative scoring using the Career Adapt-Abilities Scale (CAAS); and (2) qualitative interviews using a self-made questionnaire. CAAS Scoring (Study 1) showed that EANs were highly adaptable. In addition, results of the interviews (Study 2) indicated that EANs generally follow the Career Construction Model of Adaptation (CCMA). The themes that surfaced from Study 2 agree with research cited in Johnston (2018) that adaptive readiness and contextual factors, such as career specific parental behaviors, positive relationships with parents, and social support, encouraged career adaptability. Adaptive readiness also reinforces work engagement and is facilitated by adaptability resources. Adaptability resources facilitated career exploration, proactive skill development, and finding a sense of calling. Overall, a salient finding was that nationalism guided career adaptation, with respondents experiencing post-traumatic growth. Implications for the counseling practice and management recommendations were discussed.
