Abstract/Summary

This study explored the experiences of 24 Filipino national athletes with the Covid-19 pandemic as a change event. Participants consisted of 10 male and 14 female athletes from 18 individual and team sports. A qualitative interview survey research design was utilized. Following the stages based on the SCSPP framework by Samuel, Tenenbaum, & Galily (2020), results showed that the participants were in varying states prior to the change event. Some were in peak form physically and psychologically, while others were still striving to achieve higher performance standards. However, all of them were highly motivated to pursue their sport, had goals and plans right before the Covid-19 pandemic hit. In Stage A: Initial onset, national athletes appraised some perceived gains at the start but this was quickly overshadowed by losses and challenges. They experienced a host of negative emotional responses, but also some positive responses as they took stock of the change event. Behavioral responses were adjustments and changes in activities and habits. For Stage B: Through continuing instability, national athletes perceived more hardship as the change event dragged on amidst much uncertainty. Emotionally, the majority of the responses were negative. Behavioral responses displayed a dichotomy from adaptive versus maladaptive habits. In Stage C: Through potential career trajectories, there was renewed vigor as sports was looking forward to better days. Intrapersonal, interpersonal and other factors that influenced athletes’ experience of the change event were also tackled. This study ended with a summary, conclusions and recommendations for preparation, education, practice and research.
