Abstract (English)
Verdict is an undergraduate creative writing thesis examining the Philippines’ underground, online troll culture. The narrative follows Randy “R.O.A.R.” Tahimik as he navigates a troll farm operated by a distinguished media conglomerate. As one of the top public relations and marketing firms in the country, The Marketeers Network is secretly tasked to support the “Bagong Barria, Bagong Pilipina” campaign, commanded by their presidential bet, Pennita Barria—one half of the twins of infamous dictator couple Emmanuel and Romania Barria. Randy uses social media to influence public opinion regarding the Barria family with the help of his officemates, his superior David Marie Kingston “D.M.K.” Galaw, and his absentee boss Patricia Remedios “P.R.T.” Tacay-Ying. Not only that, he also targets the rivaling Armonia family, including former Sangguniang Kabataan Chairperson and Randy’s best friend-turned-enemy Matilda. Ultimately, the goal of Verdict is to reexamine and deconstruct the lives of these so-called “trolls” who are merely surviving the harsh conditions of the country, as well as examine the larger, more sinister culture of Philippine politics.
