Abstract (English)
Disability is a topic that needs to be presented under a better light in all forms of Literature today. It is one of a multitude of topics that compels to be portrayed in a more openly manner in narratives which writers develop in order for disabled people to not only be seen and heard but to also be well-represented. With that, Dose of Magic aims to address the lack of awareness in matters of disabilities, particularly but not limited to Tourette Syndrome. TS is a neurological condition wherein those diagnosed with this condition are unable to control their tics. Thus, targeting readers from ages eight to twelve, this middle-grade novella’s plot revolves around Sal and Mahika, both of whom represent the reality and the fantasy of the aforementioned medical condition. The focus and aim of this project are not to eliminate the disability, but to accept it in its entirety. The hope is that the disabled will accept and love themselves for who and what they are – for everything they have and have not, and for everything they will be. It is a dream that is built with hope as its core foundation. Moreover, the movement of hope is not limited to the disabled, rather, it encompasses the entire society that point fingers and choose to mock the disabled population. Dose of Magic emphasizes that disabled people are not to be hidden, because just like everyone else, they, we, deserve to share the space provided within the society. We are after all, the same – humans.
