Abstract (English)
“Aspin, Askal, Aso Pa Rin!” is a collection of six short stories about the different lives of six dogs. The titles are based on the names of the main characters who are stray and rescued dogs that were mostly adopted for a while already. Their names are also a dedication to the most commonly used names, iconic Filipino names, and names that are usually related to where they were adopted. The unifying theme is the life of Aspins, even after they were rehabilitated and found their homes with diverse families. There are also underlying themes that are specific to every story to encapsulate the varying experiences they had in achieving a stable, or at least a safer life. Supporting characters have a wide range of identities throughout the stories to promote inclusivity, which is also one of the objectives of telling the stories of Aspins. This collection provides readers with more perspective and understanding of how significant the lives of animals are, especially the strays. In addition, responsible pet ownership is also encouraged and emphasized in this collection. Some scenes are parallel or relatable to readers to enhance their empathy which they may interpret and show both to animals and humans alike. The short story collection intends to contribute to Animal Literature in the Philippines with the hopes of translating these stories into the betterment of animal welfare in the country.
