Abstract (English)
This creative writing thesis is a novella set in Manila during the Second World War. The story focuses on the experience of two main characters who form an unlikely and controversial relationship. The story is ten chapters long and is told in the first-person perspective through the titular main character’s point of view. The novella tackles the complicated nature of war and the question of humanity in the face of conflict and adversity. The two main characters are Crisanto, an intelligent fifteen-year-old boy from an upper-middle-class family, and Ito Takeshi, a fresh Japanese army Captain who was transferred from China to help with the occupation of the Philippines. The story focuses on how their friendship develops them both as people. In the digital age, where information and disinformation spread like wildfire, history is being used as a political tool both locally and abroad. To combat this, it is important to raise the youth's interest in the study of history. With the Russia-Ukraine war, the Israeli-Palestine conflict, and China’s aggressive territorial approach, people tend to forget that behind the pictures, the numbers on the statistics, and weapons are people – human beings. The novella serves as a case for humanity in an era full of strife.
