Abstract (English)
Close Contact: A Judoka Anthology is a short story anthology that explores the stories of female judoka athletes from various universities. All of whom are tied by different experiences in a sport where seniority and masculinity are valued more. Eleanor Lopez, Isla Peña, Nari Lee, and Natasha Lopez not only have to fight for the sport, but also in their daily lives, which can be derailed by moral dilemmas that test their mental tenacity. The anthology is built on the aspect of feminist theory called “physical feminism,” which stems from the disciplines of combat sports and martial arts. The anthology will dismantle the romanticized image of student-athletes at the collegiate level and explore how sports can be perceived as the root of all evil for some—it is only a matter of letting free will take its course towards a better or a jaded path. The four stories will focus on different college athletes at universities that participate in collegiate tournaments. These will be told from a first-person perspective, tapping into the psychological effects of what can drive an athlete to desperation while dealing with their own personal lives. The intricacies and nuances of seeking belongingness, of feminism, body dysmorphia, patriarchy, and double standards that are imposed on women in combat sports are given emphasis. The anthology draws inspiration from real events based on the author’s experiences.
