Abstract (English)

The Roomination Effect is a gothic-kafkaesque short story collection that explores the dark facets of nostalgia from the act of rumination in the human psyche. Set in the abandoned and demolished buildings of Metro Manila and Cavite, the collection comprises four stories that encompass the themes of nostalgia and isolation. Each story tells about a character’s obsessive attachment to places and people in their memories that no longer exist. As each of them is haunted by their repressed desires and unresolved traumas, they alienate themselves from the present reality because of their infatuation with the past. Influenced by the existentialist belief of Franz Kafka and the psychoanalytic theories of Sigmund Freud’s “The Uncanny” and “Mourning and Melancholia,” the collection unravels the characters’ paranoia, anxiety, delusion, and madness as they grapple with loss when revisiting the places of their once comforting past. More importantly, The Roomination Effect aims to blend the Gothic and Kafkaesque by distilling Filipino experiences of the kababalaghan in liminal spaces, which will preserve the Filipino consciousness within the urban decay that mirrors characters’ neglected state. Ultimately, The Roomination Effect invites readers to confront their past, not only to seek consolation, but also to embrace change and self-growth.

The Roomination Effect ay isang koleksiyon ng maikling kuwento na may estilong gothic-kafkaesque na sinisiyasat ang madidilim na aspekto ng salamisim sa pamamagitan ng pagmumuni sa pag-iisip ng tao. Nakalugar sa mga inabandona at ginibang gusali sa Metro Manila at Cavite, ang koleksiyon ay binubuo ng apat na mga kuwentong sumasaklaw sa mga temang salimisim at pag-iisa. Bawat kuwento ay nagsasalaysay tungkol sa labis na pagkahumaling ng karakter sa mga lugar at taong nasa kanyang mga alaalang naglaho. Dahil sa pagmumulto ng mga kinimkim na pagnanasa at mga traumang hindi nalutas, inilalayo nila ang mga sarili sa realidad dahil sa kanilang pagkahumaling sa nakaraan. Sa impluwensya ng eksistensyalismo ni Franz Kafka at mga teoryang saykoanalitiko ni Sigmund Freud tulad ng “The Uncanny” at “Mourning and Melancholia,” inihahayag ng koleksiyon ang paranoya, pagkabalisa, delusyon, at kabaliwan ng mga karakter sa kanilang pagdanas sa pagkawala ng mga lugar na sa kanila’y nagpatahan. Higit sa lahat, nilalayon ng The Roomination Effect na pagsamahin ang Gothic at Kafkaesque sa pamamagitan ng paglalarawan ng mga karanasang Pilipino ng kababalaghan sa mga espasyong liminal, na siyang magpapanatili sa kamalayang Pilipino sa loob ng pagkabulok ng kapaligiran sa lungsod na sumasalamin sa napabayaang kalagayan ng mga tauhan. Sa kabuuan, inaanyayahan ng The Roomination Effect ang mga mambabasa na harapin ang kanilang nakaraan, hindi lamang maghangad ng konsolasyon, kundi upang yakapin din ang pagbabago at pag-unlad ng sarili.
