Abstract (English)

Where did the name Marikina come from? Many versions have been passed down by earlier Marikeños, yet only a few works revisit these stories. Marikit: Sino ka ba ulit? is a creative project that reconstructs local legends in response to the lack of a definitive origin for the city’s name. It consists of six legends that move from the town’s formation to its present condition, using water (river, rain, and flood) as the central image that connects and flows through each story.

The collection brings together the community’s collective memory in crafting these narratives, revitalizing the legends through creative reinterpretation. Drawing on myth criticism and the archetypal perspectives of Jung and Barthes, the project demonstrates how these stories respond to and shape the image of the city through its history, symbolism, and the local consciousness. By using folk literature as its foundation, the project treats recorded stories as tools to fill in the gaps in the history and memory of Marikeños, ultimately answering the question: Who is Marikit?

Saan nga ba nagmula ang pangalang Marikina? Maraming bersiyon na ang naipasa ng mga naunang Marikeño, ngunit kaunti lang ang mga akdang muling bumabalik sa mga kuwentong ito. Ang Marikit: Sino ka ba ulit? ay isang malikhaing proyekto ng muling pagkatha ng mga alamat, bilang tugon sa kawalan ng tiyak na pinagmulan ng pangalan ng bayan. Binubuo ito ng anim na alamat na tumatalon mula sa pagkabuo ng bayan hanggang sa kasalukuyang kalagayan nito, gamit ang tubig (ilog, ulan, at baha) bilang sentral na talinhaga na nag-uugnay at dumadaloy sa bawat kuwento. 

Pinagsasama ng koleksyon ang kolektibong alaala ng bayan sa pagbubuo ng mga kuwento, binibigyang-buhay ang mga alamat gamit ang malikhaing reinterpretasyon. Sa tulong ng myth criticism at mga arketipong pananaw ni Jung at Barthes, ipinakita ng proyekto kung paano sinasagot ng mga kuwento ang imahe ng lungsod gamit ang kasaysayan, simbolismo, at lokal na kamalayan nito.  Sa paggamit ng panitikang-bayan bilang batayan, ginagawang kasangkapan ang mga naitalang kuwento upang punan ang mga puwang ng kasaysayan at gunita ng mga Marikeño at sagutin ang tanong na: Sino si Marikit?
