Abstract (English)

Tails of Paw-sibility is a short story collection that defies the predominant traditions of animal fiction. By its very nature, the use of anthropomorphized animals is entrenched in fables and folklore to advocate moral lessons. In that regard, this collection deviates from such conventions by anchoring the existence of Puspin (Pusang Pinoy) cats in the Philippines in realistic fiction narratives. Moreover, it spotlights the relevance of the human-animal bond, which is central to the genre's contemporary form. The five short stories illustrate the revolutionary dynamics between human livelihoods and those of stray or domesticated cats. Within the overarching themes of innocence and experience, the collection further constitutes human-cat interactions that foster the core of change and growth. In view of the philosophical frameworks of posthumanism and animal studies, this creative writing thesis interrogates the established hierarchies within human-animal relationships. It promotes safety, empathy, and acceptance towards stray and domesticated cats. By challenging the foregoing Aesopian tradition, the work attempts to immerse readers in emotional-driven realities that accentuate the overlooked cognition of Filipino cats. Altogether, Tails of Paw-sibility seeks to broaden the possibilities of animal fiction, both as a literary genre in the Philippines and a vessel for social awareness, encouraging readers to recalibrate their preconceived notions concerning the feline experience.

Tails of Paw-sibility ay isang koleksiyon ng maikling kuwento na sumasalungat sa mga karaniwang tradisyon ng animal fiction. Mula rito, ang paggamit ng mga “anthropomorphized” na hayop ay naka-ugat sa mga pabula at alamat upang isiwalat ang mga gintong aral. Kaugnayan dito, ang koleksiyon ay lumilihis sa mga naturang kumbensyon sa pamamagitan ng paglalarawan ng Puspin (Pusang Pinoy) o mga pusa sa Pilipinas sa mga makatotohanang kathang-isip na naratibo. Bukod dito, binibigyang diin ang pakikipag-ugnayan ng tao-hayop bilang sentro sa kontemporaryong anyo ng genre. Inilalahad ng limang maikling kuwento ang rebolusyonaryong dinamiko sa pagitan ng mga kabuhayan ng tao at ng mga ligaw o alagang pusa. Sa loob ng mga pangkalahatang tema ng kamusmusan at karanasan, ang koleksiyon ay lalong bumubuo ng mga interaksyon ng tao-pusa na nagbunsod ng pagbabago at paglago. Gayon sa mga pilosopikal na balangkas ng posthumanism at pag-aaral ng hayop, ang tesis ng malikhaing pagsulat na ito ay nagtatanong sa mga itinatag na herarkiya sa loob ng relasyon ng tao-hayop. Itinataguyod nito ang kaligtasan, empatiya, at pagtanggap sa mga naliligaw at maamong pusa. Sa pamamagitan ng paghamon sa tradisyong Aesopian, itinatangka ng akda na ihatid ang mga mambabasa sa mga emosyonal na realidad na nagpapahiwatig sa nakaligtaang kognisyon ng mga Puspin. Sa kalahatan, ang Tails of Paw-sibility ay naglalayong palawakin ang mga posibilidad ng animal fiction bilang isang genre ng panitikan sa Pilipinas at isang sisidlan para sa panlipunang kamalayan, na naghihikayat sa mga mambabasa na muling baguhin ang kanilang mga pangunahing paniniwala ukol sa karanasan ng pusa.
