Abstract (English)

Sa Loob ng Muralya: Pagkatha at Muling Pagsasalaysay sa Identidad is composed of seven young adult fantasy short stories, retelling the stories of Handiong and Baltog from Ibalong (Bicol epic) and the folk stories of Juan Tamad, and how identity is molded through language. By putting the characters from the Bicol epic-fragment in a fantasy world that mirrors a part of contemporary Philippines, fantasy from the epic and Western fantasy is clashed against one another to form stories where the foreign, the capital, and the regions meet. The stories revolve around a city, Muralya, which is surrounded by tall walls and has a government that's forcefully erasing the citizens' memories of their history and language in favor of the language of the foreigners and planted in the youth's minds is the dream of migrating to a foreign world. Through the clash of English, Filipino, Spanish, and Bikol, the project contributes to a postcolonial Filipino that transcends Tagalog-centrism, and through the borrowing of tropes from Western fantasy, the project contributes to the postcolonial fantasy in teh Philippines outside of the traditional magical realism.

Ang Sa Loob ng Muralya: Pagkatha at Muling Pagsasalaysay sa Identidad ay binubuo ng pitong maikling kuwentong pangkabataan, na muling pagsasalaysay sa mga kuwento nina Handiong at Baltog mula sa Ibalong (epikong Bikol) at sa mga kuwentong-bayan ni Juan Tamad, at kung paano nahuhubog ang identidad sa pamamagitan ng wika. Gamit ang mga karakter sa epikong Bikol na inilagay sa isang pantastikong mundo na sumasalamin sa bahagi ng kasalukuyang Pilipinas, pinagtatagpo ang pantasya mula sa epiko at ang pantasya mula sa Kanluran upang bumuo ng mga kuwento na nagbabanggaan ang banyaga, ang kabisera, at ang rehiyon. Umiikot ang mga kuwento sa isang siyudad, ang Muralya, na pinapalibutan ng matataas na pader at may gobyernong pilit binubura sa alaala ng mga tao ang kanilang kasaysayan at wika kapalit ng wika ng banyaga at itinatanim sa isip ng mga kabataan ang pangarap na makapunta sa banyagang mundo. Sa pamamagitan ng pagbabanggaan ng mga wikang Ingles, Filipino, Bikol at Español, nag-aambag ang proyekto sa postkolonyal na wikang Filipino na lumalabas sa Tagalog-sentrismo, at sa pamamagitan ng paghiram sa mga trope sa pantasyang Kanluran, nag-aambag ang proyekto sa postkolonyal na pantasyang Filipino na lumabas sa tradisyunal na magic realism.
