Abstract/Summary

Bulan, Sorsogon, a town deeply connected to the sea, boasts a vibrant fishing industry. This thesis, “Tuparan: A History of the Fishing Industry of Bulan, Sorsogon (1966- 2004),” delves into a specific period of significant transformation within this industry, from 1966 to 2004. The chosen timeframe is guided by the availability of historical documents (from 1966) and the official adoption of the “Home of the Padaraw” label in 2004, which highlights the importance of the fishing festival. The thesis reconstructs the evolution of Bulan's fishing industry, identifying the conditions that contributed to its beginnings and examining its contributions to the town's economic development during the period. Through historical research and oral history interviews with fishermen, fish dealers, processors, and representatives of the Local Government Unit (LGU), the study assesses the impact of environmental conservation initiatives on the fishing industry and the community. It explores how the Municipality of Bulan has integrated conservation and modernization efforts to foster sustainable development. The thesis evaluates the influence of the fishing industry on Bulan's overall economic development, providing a comprehensive understanding of its historical and current structure. The chapters are sub-periodized, offering a structured approach to analyzing the social, economic, and technological advancements that reshaped the industry over four decades. While limitations include gaps in historical records and potential biases in oral history interviews, the study aims to offer a detailed and nuanced narrative of the fishing industry's evolution and its implications for the Bulan fishing community.
