Abstract/Summary
Angono, Rizal is considered to be the Art Capital of the Philippines. Up to date, the city has already produced two National Artists—Carlos ‘Botong’ Francisco and Prof. Lucio San Pedro. An outstanding family of artists as well has been residing in Angono—the Blanco family. The family has made their fair share of contributions to the Angono and Philippine visual arts scene, with one of them being the family academy that they founded in 2001. The Blanco Family Academy is a non-stock corporation that provided students an opportunity to receive quality education at an affordable price. The academy has also been a vehicle in continuing the Angono art tradition by continuously honing their students’ creative skills and by bringing the said tradition to different parts of the Philippines. Ultimately, it is through the academy wherein the family has passed down their own art style—folk realism. Despite these though, there are no works yet revolving around the academy. Hence, this study aims to shed light on the Blanco Family Academy. Moreover, this study also aims to narrate the history and trace the development of the academy, with external and internal factors that influenced the academy over time, which leads to the discussion of the academy’s contributions to the Philippine visual arts and education. Furthermore, interviews were conducted for the study. In line with this, the theory of New Institutionalism was used along with the historical and oral history method.
