Abstract (English)

The short expository documentary presents a qualitative look at the cosplay phenomenon in the country through the perspective of Filipino cosplay idols and cosplay fans, with inputs from academicians specializing in popular culture. The research recorded individual interviews with cosplay subjects, i.e. idols and fans, utilizing a semi-structured (open-ended) set of questions, conducted during the 3-day Cosplay Mania 2025 convention on October 3-5, 2025, at the SMX Convention Center, Manila.

The questions probed into the perceptions of the interviewees on cosplay as a subculture based on their own lived experiences and into their attitudes towards the mainstreaming and commodification of cosplay elements in popular culture. It also explored their thoughts on the psychological, social, and economic impact of cosplay.

Observations were also noted by the researchers on the line-up of convention activities, stage performances, play spaces, innovations in creation and crafting technologies, commercialization of cosplay creative properties and merchandise, and the community-building dynamics among attendees. Using an inductive strategy, the researchers identified, analyzed, and interpreted common themes and trends from the interview responses and the highlights of the convention.

Standout themes include the recognition of cosplay as a legitimate subculture; mainstreaming of cosplay; identity exploration in cosplay; sophistication of cosplay fandom; social media as the primary driver of cosplay popularity and acceptance; and supportive cosplay communities that foster inclusivity and diversity.

Ang maikling ekspositoryong dokumentaryo ay paglalahad ukol sa kaganapang cosplay mula sa sariling pananaw at karanasan ng mga Filipinong cosplay na idolo at tagahanga. Kasama rin sa dokumentaryo ang mga papananaw at kabatiran ng mga sosylohista na dalubhasa sa sining at kulturang popular. Ang dokumentaryo ay batay sa mga panayam na isinagawa noong tatlong araw na kumbensiyon na kilala bilang Cosplay Mania 2025 sa SMX Convention Center sa Manila.

May sariling lipon ng mga “open-ended” na tanong na ibinigay sa mga cosplay na idolo at sa mga cosplay na taga-hanga. Ang mga katanungan ay naglayong saliksikin ang mga pananaw ng mga kinapanayam ukol sa cosplay bilang isang sariling sub-kultura at alamin ang kanilang mga saloobin ukol sa pagsanib ng sub-kultura ng cosplay sa kulturang popular o “mainstream culture” at sa komersiyalisasyon ng cosplay.

Sinaliksik din ang kanilang mga palagay tungkol sa sikolohikal, sosyal, at ekonomikong epekto ng cosplay sa kanila. Pinag-aralan rin ng mga mananaliksik ang mga nakitang kaganapan sa kumbensiyon kabilang ang mga pagtatanghal, mga inobasyon sa paglikha at sa teknolohiya, ang komersiyalisasyon ng mga element at likhaing cosplay, at ang samahan ng komunidad ng coplay. Tinukoy at siniyasat ng mga mananaliksik ang mga nangingibabaw na mga tema mula sa mga panayam at mga kaganapang na-obserba.
