Abstract (English)
This paper augments the application of the Communicative Constitution of Organizations (CCO) theory and the Four Flows model (McPhee & Zaug, 2008) in organizational communication through a volunteer communication system. In this study, the communication processes of the De La Salle University (DLSU) Br. Alfred Shields FSC Ocean Research (SHORE) Center were examined to assess their implications on the organization’s Reef Citizen Science (RCS) research endeavors involving volunteers or Citizen Scientists. The researchers found that the unstructured communication system within the SHORE Center hinders volunteer management processes and ad hoc coordination of RCS initiatives, elucidating the unstructured implementation of the Four Flows. To optimize SHORE’s volunteer communication processes, the researchers produced communication interventions, namely a Volunteer Communication Manual, along with the implementation of the Alwan Citizen Science Volunteer Program for Data Assessors (ALVP-DA), which includes a (1) volunteer recruitment campaign and a (2) three-day workshop. Evaluation of the interventions revealed that the ALVP-DA and manual effectively established structured and formalized communication processes between SHORE and the newly recruited volunteers. It is suggested that establishing a structured volunteer communication system will aid SHORE in developing its volunteer communication processes to address its goals of mobilizing marine conservation efforts through RCS.
