Abstract (English)
The Philippine film industry is characterized by a project-based, freelance structure that fosters widespread labor precarity, leaving many media workers without stable income, social protections, or formal contracts. Filipino stunt performers acutely embody this vulnerability, facing a unique intersection of physical danger, economic insecurity, and professional marginalization. This practice-based research project investigates the specific forms of financial vulnerability, professional marginalization, and physical risk that define their careers, as well as the coping mechanisms they employ to navigate this lack of institutional support. The study utilizes a phenomenological methodology, culminating in the production of "Stuntman," a 15-minute action-comedy short film. The film's narrative is directly informed by qualitative data gathered from semi-structured interviews with stunt directors and performers in Metro Manila. By using an accessible narrative genre, this project aims to translate the lived experiences of precarious labor into a culturally grounded and comedic critique, using the stunt performer's struggles and fictional victory as a lens to examine systemic insecurities faced by the wider Filipino working class in a lighter way.
