Abstract/Summary

Love My Buddy: A Children’s Show aims to teach children from ages 4-8 about body positivity. Throughout the Philippines' colonial history, Filipinos have grown to idealize Western beauty standards as it entails a status of wealth and power. These have led Filipinos to feel inferior if they do not bear these traits, and hold themselves to a lower standard (David and Okazaki, 2006). Some experience judgment and criticism if they do not align with the “thin and white” ideal, sometimes even at a young age.

These ideals can be influenced and enforced through media and can shape the way we view ourselves. According to Dy et al. (2023), the Philippines is one of the leading countries in terms of media consumption, especially in online activities. This would also consequently lead to an increase in media consumption among Filipino children as well. Children’s knowledge of physical characteristics starts as early as 15 months of age. They learn through their parents, guardians, and eventually, the children they meet at school.

In this vital period of childhood development, the project aims to educate children and instill an appreciation and awareness of their body traits. It will have seven (7) episodes in one season, and five (5) episodes will highlight one physical trait, specifically skin tones, hair textures, body shapes, height, and facial features. The language used in the episodes is English and Filipino to cater to the Filipino audience. The production’s medium will be formed through mixed media aspects, namely illustrations, animations, and a video aspect, to engage children. It will have a sufficient runtime of 6/7 minutes per episode and will be distributed online (mainly on YouTube) and to different schools for accessibility purposes.

Two (2) episodes and a production book were produced for this thesis.
