Abstract/Summary
Unmuted delves into the profound psychological impact of sexual harassment, with a particular focus on its prevalence and effects within online environments. Global research conducted by Plan International reveals that 7 out of 10 Filipino girls and young women have encountered online harassment on social media (Narvaez). Thus, implementing engaging material that entertains and educates may contribute to maintaining a safer online space.
Hosted on a website, Unmuted is an empathy-building hypernarrative, described as interactive multimedia storytelling incorporating choice points, hyperlinks, and alternative pathways to create a non-linear reading experience. The project aims to enhance users’ ability to understand and share the feelings of the avatar by immersing them in its healing journey, allowing them to experience the challenges it faces that conjure realistic reactions.
The innovative approach of this material extends beyond raising awareness; it aims to foster a participatory culture. As a result, the hypernarrative emerges from creative collaboration among selected students, teachers, and mental health practitioners who, through one-on-one interviews, have contributed to generating ideas, addressing challenges, and creating content ethically.
Furthermore, information about the Safe Spaces Act and contact information for relevant units will be advertised on the website. Through its original photography and visuals, copyright-free music and sound effects, and pre-recorded voiceovers, Unmuted allows for a multi-sensory experience. It operates on the Vercel cloud platform in app format and is publicly available at https://unmuted.vercel.app.
