Abstract/Summary
Inspired by the Bicol saying, “If you know many languages, you have many souls,” and driven by a passion for language and a personal connection to South Cotabato, Wikabularyo! is a 10-part vertical video series for social media that explores the province’s rich linguistic diversity. The videos feature a fun, young, and unique mix of media, blending graphics, green screens, voiceovers, skits, expert interviews, and teaching segments. A dedicated website will accompany the series, offering additional resources and interactive content. Situated in the heart of Region 12, South Cotabato is home to diverse communities speaking Hiligaynon, Cebuano, Tagalog, and a hybrid mix of these languages. Despite their close proximity, variations in meaning often lead to miscommunication, and little research has been done on the hybrid Sox-Tagalog. To engage younger Filipinos in learning about local languages, Wikabularyo! presents short-form, accessible content. The first four episodes explore words with different meanings across Hiligaynon, Cebuano, and Tagalog, such as Libog, Libang, Karon, and Lingin. The following two highlight the multiple meanings of Bati and Dula. Three episodes focus on Sox-Tagalog, breaking down its use of action words, adjectives, and unique non-Tagalog particles. The final episode shifts to practical financial literacy, examining how money is used in South Cotabato compared to its Hiligaynon and Tagalog counterparts. By blending education and entertainment, Wikabularyo! aims to promote linguistic awareness and cultural appreciation through an engaging, digital-first approach.
