Abstract/Summary
The Balikbayan Box has become deeply rooted in Filipino culture, symbolizing Overseas Filipino Workers’ dedication, selflessness, and love for their families. However, beyond the material things it contains inside, there is also an untold story that we need to unpack – the tale of time, longing, and unanswered questions faced by their children left behind.
Documentary: Outside the Balikbayan Box features three individuals: Thrisha Canindo, 19, a biology student from Sarangani Province, Sean Almario, 19, an engineering student from Batangas City, and Kyle Duya, 23, a medical technology student from Macabebe, Pampanga Province.
The documentary aims to shed light on the profound challenges these individuals endure growing up–only seeing their parents on screen. Additionally, the documentary also delves into the reasons why the OFWs had to leave the country and seek better opportunities abroad. By exploring these narratives, the film offers a deeper understanding of the challenges and sacrifices made by both the parents and their children.
The film does not revolve around determining who suffers more, but rather focuses on the heart-wrenching reality of these individuals who find themselves with no other options.
