Abstract/Summary
The film created by the proponents aims to explore the themes of mental health, perception, and reality through the mockumentary and found footage film format. Using this style can be a powerful way to delve into one's mental state and explore the concept of reality and provide a different approach towards storytelling of the horror genre as it implies that the film was recovered from a real event that happened and that the characters within the film are real people who went through a terrifying event.
In our generation today, there seems to be a lack of films that utilize this format in the Philippine setting as the majority of Filipino films are shot in a narration type of format. Through Malikmata’s first person narration, the story’s objective is to unfold the mysteries in a more immersive and natural/raw manner.
The short film follows the story of two students, Juan and Amanda, who were tasked to capture campus life and to interview students’ perception of the university during a time of crisis as there are less students that enrolled in the institution due to the increase of the tuition fee and a death involving a student. Through this task, both experience eerie occurrences captured by the camera. This leads to Amanda questioning her own reality—affecting her already deteriorating mental state. Malikmata is a film that shows the horrors of one’s condition; telling the story through the lens of the characters themselves, and leaves viewers questioning what is real or not.
