Abstract (English)
Green tea is widely known for its many health benefits including reproductive health and embryonic development. The lesser-known variety of green tea, Hojicha, may presumably have similar and even higher phytochemical components. These can be attributed to certain variations in the process of producing Hojicha. The present study therefore aimed to screen the potential effects of Hojicha on the growth and development of the chick embryo (Gallus gallus domesticus) through angiogenic and morphometric analyses. While angiogenesis is a key indicator for embryonic growth, morphometric analysis can further assess the effect on the development of the embryo’s external anatomical features. Hojicha of varying doses i.e. low dose, medium dose, and high dose were administered to the chicken eggs on the 5th day of incubation and results were harvested on the 12th day of egg incubation. The following angiogenic parameters were included in the study: total vessel length, junction density, total number of junctions, vascular endpoints and vascular density. On the other hand, the morphometric parameters included length measurements of crown-to-rump, thigh, drumstick, shank, third toe, wing, bill, and neck. Results of the study after statistical analyses showed that the low dose Hojicha exhibited a significant increase in vascular endpoint formation, indicating potential enhancement of angiogenesis. Moreover, the shank and bill growth significantly responded to the medium and low doses of the Hojicha, respectively. These may be attributed to the presence and concentration of certain phytochemical compounds in Hojicha and thus, may further suggest the importance of optimal dosing and developmental timing when screening its biological effects on embryonic growth. The findings of this study may provide preliminary basis for application on avian biology research – possibly for nutraceutical usage to potentially aid mitigating egg quality variabilities.
