Abstract (English)
Fandoms have evolved into dynamic, participatory ecosystems with distinct structures and engagement processes. This study explores how Filipino fujoshi fandoms—communities centered on Boys’ Love (BL) and yaoi media—function as emergent organizations within online spaces. While fandom culture has been widely studied, limited research has examined fandoms as organizational entities with structured roles, shared goals, and collaborative processes. Using a qualitative netnographic approach, this study employed participant observations and semi-structured interviews with seventeen (17) Filipino fujoshis. Findings reveal that these fujoshi fandoms operate through decentralized yet functional structures, where influence and engagement shape roles rather than formal hierarchies. Filipino cultural values such as pakikisama and kapwa shape collaborative and adaptive engagement, while, informal power dynamics and socio-economic barriers limit engagement for fujoshis. By redefining fandoms as emergent organizations, this study contributes to both fandom and organizational studies, highlighting how decentralized structures and adaptive engagement sustain these communities. Future research should examine the economic dimensions of fan participation, the effects of digital platform policies, and cross-cultural fandom comparisons to deepen our understanding of fandoms as organizational entities.
