Abstract/Summary
This study examined the impact of hook-up culture on the relationship and intimacy expectations of Generation Z in Metro Manila. Using a quantitative-descriptive correlational research design, data was collected from 102 respondents aged 18 to 25 through a self-administered online survey. The study examined relationships between four key variables: dating mindset and behaviors, intimacy mindset and behaviors, attitudes and beliefs toward hook-up culture, and relationship and intimacy expectations. Descriptive analyses revealed that respondents exhibited a moderate level of dating mindset and behaviors, a high level of intimacy mindset and behaviors, a high level of attitudes and beliefs toward hook-up culture, and a high level of relationship and intimacy expectations. This suggests that participation in hook-up culture coexists with, rather than diminishes, the desire for deeper emotional connections. Additionally, while respondents accept and engage with hook-up culture, their dating and intimacy approaches are shaped by more than just casual encounters, including personal values, experiences, or societal norms. Correlational analyses showed no significant relationships among the study’s key variables. Sociodemographic characteristics, dating mindset, and intimacy mindset did not significantly correlate with attitudes and beliefs toward hook-up culture. Likewise, attitudes and beliefs toward hook-up culture had no significant relationship with relationship and intimacy expectations, suggesting that external factors like digitalization and peer influence may play a larger role in shaping long-term relational expectations. The findings of the study challenge the assumption that hook-up culture directly influences relationship and intimacy expectations, highlighting the complexity of modern dating behaviors in the Philippine context.
