Abstract/Summary

This study draws a profile of the socio-economic status of the students of Notre Dame of Tulunan enrolled during the school year 1984-1985. The study made use of the descriptive-normative method of research to gather information regarding the socio-economic status of the students. The method drew a profile of the students' socio-economic status and showed the trends and patterns common to these students. It analyzed the combined monthly income of the students' family, the occupation and educational attainment of the heads of the family, social position in the community, as well as their housing and property. The respondents in this study were the high school students of Notre Dame of Tulunan for the school year 1984-1985 who were selected at random. One hundred ninety-six (196) respondents out of a total school population of 387 were selected by stratified random sampling. The confidence level and standard deviation used were .05 and .10 respectively. The questionnaire used for gathering data was adapted from the PAASCU Socio-Economic Survey which was previously used by Dalwatan (1979), Sta. Catalina College (1983) and other researchers. The Rating Plan of the Bureau of Public Schools Socio-Economic Survey was adapted by the researcher in determining the socio-economic level of the students.

The data reflected that majority of the parents of students of Notre Dame of Tulunan belong to the low socio-economic level. This appeared very strong in the study as confirmed by both the primary and subsidiary indicators. This finding indicated that the parents may not be able to absorb the yearly tuition fee increase and so the school can be converted into a mission school since one criterion of a mission school is that the parents of the students belong to the low socio-economic status.
