Abstract/Summary
The current study aims to find out if hope, the positive dispositional state with a sense of successful agency and pathways thinking, and volition, human capacity to maintain focus and effort towards a goal despite distractions, influence goal-directed behavior of college students experiencing depressive symptoms. The researcher conducted a survey on 265 college students enrolled in a private higher education institution in Makati City, Philippines using a self-report survey including Time and Study Environment subscale of the Motivated Learning Strategies Questionnaire (MLSQ) as measure of goal-directed behavior, Beck Depression Inventory II (BDI II) as measure of depressive symptoms, Hope Scale (HS) as measure of hope, and Academic Volitional Strategies Inventory (AVSI) as measure of volition. The results show that depressive symptoms and goal-directed behavior have a significant inverse relationship while depressive symptoms predict goal-directed behavior. On the other hand, there is no evidence of conditional effect as hope does not interact with depressive symptoms. Further, level of depressive symptoms was found not to be a predictor of volition; however, bootstrap estimation reveals that indirect effect, direct effect and total effect occur. The results suggest the importance of volition on the inverse relationship of depressive symptoms and goal-directed behavior. Other variables might be affecting conditional effect of hope to goal-directed behavior in relation to depressive symptoms.
