Abstract/Summary
This current study explored how an increased in one’s awareness of death (mortality salience; MS) is associated with a decrease in one’s motivation in life (apathy) in middle-age. This research hypothesized that awareness of mortality may be associated with apathy when one is not equipped with adequate personal meaning (PM) as they transition to the second half of life. Previous related terror management theory (TMT) researches have established meaning as an effective MS buffer. Guided by previous TMT studies, the researcher determined the moderating role of personal meaning (PM) on apathy. One hundred sixty-four (164) middle-aged participated in the research and completed the obituary reading MS task, two standardized questionnaires Personal Meaning Profile (PMP) and Dimensional Apathy Scale (DAS). Regression analysis results provided no evidence that MS is a significant predictor of apathy, and showed that PM is a strong negative significant predictor of apathy. An interaction effect between MS and PM is a moderately negative significant predictor of apathy. Similar trend is also found in the interaction effects of MS and PM domains on apathy. Discussions were focused on the findings of the research, the moderating functions of PM on MS and apathy. Findings on how these three variables are related and their implications were further discussed, stressing the significance of personal meaning in psychological interventions to address apathy in middle-age.
