Abstract/Summary
This action research pertains to our company’s low inventory turnover of the stocks that are consigned in different stores nationwide. The problem is the lack of systematic inventory system and policies in replenishing and monitoring of stocks that are consigned in retail stores. Our company is a manufacturer, importer, and distributor of electrical and lighting products. Guided by the PDSA (Plan, Do, Study, Act) framework by W. Edwards Deming and merchandise planning principles, our team, composed of people from the Sales Department, collaborated in this action research. We identified and implemented specific interventions to address the low inventory turnover. The first cycle of this action research covered the necessary clean up of inventories in selected stores in order to free up the inventory records from defective and unsalable items that were left unreported in the past due to varying reasons. This involves actual physical count in stores, segregation of bad stocks, processing, and scheduling of pull out. During the second research cycle, our team focused on establishing a new way of processing the replenishment of stocks for the stores and started building up the database for effective monitoring of inventories in the future. In both cycles, we, the research participants, gained deeper insights in the area of merchandising, monitoring of stocks, and creating sales plans, which were further infused to the current process. This action research enabled our team to work together to prove our capability to improve the Gross Margin Return on Inventory through a more effective collaboration among the people involved. This is for us to sustain and improve the business in consignment setup.
