Abstract/Summary

This study aims: to investigate the profile of the catechists and to analyze their situation when they are admitted into the program; to identify their attitudes, religious knowledge and skills with regard to catechesis; to find out the needs and difficulties of the catechists and finally to draw up a specific, holistic, systematic and integrated formation program for St. Luke’s Catechist School. For this study descriptive-quantitative survey research was used: A checklist with likert scales for the respondent catechists and open-ended questions for the teachers are the most important instruments utilized to gather the needed data. Seventy six, out of ninety one catechists were randomly asked to answer the survey instrument and ten teachers were respondents of the questionnaires, to give feedback. Findings of this study show that St. Luke’s Catechists School is in urgent need of a formation training program, specifically in three areas: knowledge, attitudes and skills. Firstly, in the area of knowledge the catechists know basic doctrines of the Catholic Church but they are confused because of lack of a well grounded faith foundation. In the area of attitudes the catechists need to have the right attitudes in order to be effective in their mission. Lastly, in the area of skills the catechists are skillful and gifted but they need to be helped in knowing how to share what they have learned and also in how to handle groups. The study also reveals the felt needs or difficulties encountered in the training school. This study strongly affirms that St. Luke’s Catechist School is in urgent need for a holistic, systematic formation program which will help catechists to be well grounded in the knowledge of the doctrines, skillful and with right attitudes in order the continue to mission of Christ to serve the people of God, a God whose love for everyone is unconditional.
