Abstract/Summary
This thesis studied the nature of dropout problems in Widya Mandala Catholic University (WMCU) and aimed to find solutions to the problems. The study employed the descriptive method of research using document analysis, causal comparative analysis and survey method. The subjects of the study were all the faculty members who taught at the first, second and third year levels of the different departments, the administrators and the classmates of students who had dropped out and were still studying at WMCU. Other sources of data were the university records on enrollment, attendance and holding power of the professional offerings or courses. Two structured questionnaires were developed as instruments of the study. Statistical measures used were percentage, ranking, z test and the X2 chi square test. The following conclusions were advanced in the study: 1. The dropout problem in Widya Mandala Catholic University was a serious problem as evidenced by high, through declining rates during the preceding five years. 2. As perceived by the students, the three most important causes had something to do with academic failures and frustrations. The same perception was made by teachers through a sociological factor mentioned, such as, marriage. 3. In spite of the seriousness of the dropout problem, most of the students considered it a minor problem. This was may be a result of conditioning . 4. The intermediate dropout rate was somewhat high which indicated that a substantial number of students do not continue their studies even before taking the final examination. This could have implication on the importance of guidance and counseling. 5. Male students appeared to have higher tendency to dropout than female students.
