Abstract/Summary

This research focuses on the Japanese quality management concept; the kaizen philosophy and how it is being applied in selected basic educational institutions in Metro Manila, Philippines. Kaizen literally translates to “continuous improvement” and it is being practiced in the business, healthcare and education industries all over the world. As a quality management tool, the 5S methodology and the PDCA method are some of the practices used in organizations to adhere to the kaizen philosophy. This research explores how kaizen is being applied in the Philippine context of education, specifically in the basic education level in Metro Manila. By using Robert Yin’s qualitative multiple case study design, there were 3 participant schools for this research with a total of 13 participants. Triangulation of the transcript of interviews, presentation of pertinent school documents and documentation of the site-visits were used as the method of data analysis. In the discussion of the results, each case was assigned to codes, categories and themes based on the data given by the respective schools. The results showed that there were 4 emergent themes that were common in all participant schools with regard to how kaizen is being applied in basic educational institutions in Metro Manila. These themes are ‘continuous improvement’, ‘student improvement’, ‘communication’ and ‘functions’.
