Abstract/Summary
This study intends to develop experiments which will demonstrate the applications of some basic chemistry principles to various technology areas and/or industrial processes.
There are five experiments included in this paper which demonstrate the applications of basic chemical concepts and principles in industry and/or technology.
The preparation of the experiments involved selection of topics/experimental activities (where trainers of the different technology areas were consulted) gathering materials and information, organizing and writing the experimental activities and critical evaluation by trainors for necessary revisions.
The experimental activities were tried out in five basic chemistry classes at the Manila Technician Institute. These classes were selected at random. Each class consisted of 15 students belonging to different technology areas. To determine whether the objectives set for each experiment were met, appraisal items were given after completion of the experimental activity.
From the actual situations experienced and observed in trying out the experimental activities, a trainor's guide was developed to aid chemistry trainors in conducting the five experiments and to serve as source material for the possible outcomes of each experiment, relating them to chemical and/or technological concepts and theories.
Analysis of the results of the appraisal items show that almost all the objectives set for each experiment were achieved. Based on these preliminary findings, it can be said that the suggested experiments, when utilized to advantage by a chemistry trainor in a Technician Institute, will enable the students to acquire skills and technical know-how necessary for their initial training as technicians. It will, in some way, enrich the training experiences of the students and make it more meaningful.
