Abstract/Summary
This action research addresses the weak internal control over inventory of Microtel Inns and Suites (MISPI). The COSO report defines internal control as a process designed to provide reasonable assurance regarding the achievement of objectives in relation to (1) effectiveness and efficiency of operations (2) reliability of financial reporting and (3) compliance with applicable laws and regulations. One concern related to inventory management and has a significant impact on the organization pertains to the discrepancy between recorded inventory and physical inventory. To collect and validate data, I used the ladder of inference and left hand column. Through this tools, we were able to conclude that in order to strengthen the internal control of MISPI, policies and procedures and proper monitoring must be established. This was validated by the Committee of Sponsoring Organizations of the Treadway Commissions (COSO) Internal Control Integrated Framework provides detailed information about internal controls. ADKAR change model was also engaged and used as a guide in taking the interventions. This works on two dimension business and people which was important because we need the employees to ensure the dedication of the employees that are part of the inventory management in order to achieve the common goal. The objective of this action research paper is to create and implement improvements in order to have an efficient and effective process in inventory count and its goal is to have reliable inventory records that will eventually result to cost efficiency. The measure of the effectiveness of this action research was the declining amount of the reconciling items and the cost of variance. Through this action research, the team were became more efficient in their work.
