Abstract/Summary
This thesis examines the extent to which the Stanford Achievement Test (SAT) serves its purpose in the educational measurement of the general achievement of the grade school students of St. Scholastica College (SSC) through an item analytical study. The study covers three Intermediate grade levels of students--Grades V, VI and VIII, enrolled at St. Scholastica's College, Grade School Department for the school year 1975-76. The instrument used in the study is the Stanford Achievement Test, form A, new Edition, 1973. The subtests included in the SAT Intermediate Levels are: Vocabulary, Reading comprehension, Word study skills, Mathematics concepts, Mathematics computation, Mathematics application, Spelling, Language, Social science, Science and Listening comprehension. To facilitate faster and easier computations, the writer uses the high-low-27-percent-group method and refers to the estimated values of PH and PL from the Chung Teh Fan table. The method employed two kinds of statistics namely: index of difficulty and index of discrimination. Based on the findings, the following conclusions are drawn: 1) item difficulty. SAT Intermediate Level I for Grade V of the 11 subtests, 9 are considered effective, which means that based on their indices of difficulty, majority of the items fall on Moderately Difficult category. The Spelling test is the only subtest which challenges the students' intellectual capacity at a very small scale. SAT Intermediate level I for grade VI: In this test, only Social Science, Science and Listening Comprehension are found to be acceptable as far as the majority of moderately difficult items is concerned. In the Language areas, they were found to be very easy for the students. In general, the test is too easy for the students. SAT Intermediate Level II for Grade VII: Based on the difficulty index and percentage of acceptable items, the writer considers four tests as above average which means above 50 percent. These are Vocabulary, Social Science, Science and Listening Compre
