Abstract/Summary
Capitol Medical Center (CMC) is one of the premier tertiary level hospitals in the Philippines today. A 300-bed capacity, full service hospital in the heart of the metro that faces significant challenges in the near future, With other hospitals choosing to expand, such as the St. Luke's Medical Center and the New Medical City, CMC is beginning to look like dwarf among giants. Hospitals now have specialty centers that give them the bragging rights for a current, state of-the-art treatment. It is not difficult to find satellite clinics or large hospitals nestled within malls and shopping centers.
But aside from the giants, there are numerous small players assaulting the health care market from a variety of fronts. With alternative medication gaining headway and traditional medicine making a comeback, there is little wonder why many would rather self-medicate or seek medical assistance from non licensed individuals.
And with the deteriorating national economic scenario, Filipinos are looking for more value for their money while in extreme cases would forego treatment all together.
So what is a family-owned and run corporation to do in the midst of such adversities? Grow. With a 35-year heritage, the solution for a tertiary hospital is to increase its scope and scale, thereby leveraging economies of scale and creating significant value for the clientele. But it is no longer sufficient to do the same things in the same way. Processes, systems, and procedures need to be improved and updated to ensure that CMC not only provides high quality, excellent service but it also does this in a timely and efficient manner.
