Abstract/Summary

BRISTOL Integrated School, Inc. is a school for special children (SPED), preschool toddlers and grade school students (Grades 1 to 4). It is located in Diversion Road, Lucena City. Bristol offers a curriculum that is eclectic and non-traditional and is patterned after Montessori Schools, however, Bristol also provides traditional type of teaching wherein students are given assignments which is the same assignment given to traditional schools. For the SPED, it offers mainstreaming for special children who are qualified to join the regular class of pre-school and grade school classes.

Presently, the school has functional strategies, but all of these functional strategies is useless unless it supports the accomplishment of the objective through a corporate strategy. Corporate and financial strategy are the ones that serves as a road map in the formulation of functional strategies. This is the purpose of this paper that is to arrive at a probable, feasible and possible corporate and financial strategy.

To do so, an in-depth analysis of the Strategic Environment where the school belongs to is needed. It is said that no man is an island and this is the same way with any organization. The school can be affected by the various opportunities and threats present in the External Environment. The opportunities in the Macro-environment should be taken advantage of and for the threats, the school should be one step ahead of a possible threat so as not to be caught unaware.

Through the application of the frameworks and concepts in Strategic Management, the approach in this paper was taken one step at a time. The dimension of strategy that was utilized for the strategic map are specialization and price policy.

There are two proposed corporate strategies. First, is Emphasize on Developing Long-Term Customer Loyalty by setting up Grades 5 and 6. Thru this strategy, the parents of students in Grade 4 will still continue to enroll their children in BRISTOL. Likewise, this would create a new market area where BRISTOL can get a share and eventually increase net profit. Second, is focused on strengthening the unique teaching methods for special children that are mainstreamed to the regular class. Analyzing the strategic map, there is no competition in the mainstreaming of students for special education. Therefore, there is no competition present in Lucena City for said service.

BRISTOL has to implement a focused differentiation strategy since the school has a limited geographic scope and their target market belongs to the middle class and up who are price conscious and gives importance to the quality of education offered to their children.

Thru said strategy, it is surmised that competitive advantage will be achieved because a sufficient number of buyers become strongly attached to the differentiated attributes. The more that BRISTOL differentiated its offering to buyers, then the more the parents bond with the school. Successful differentiation allows a firm to:

a) Command a premium price for its product

b) Increase unit sales (because additional buyers are won over by the differentiating features)

c) Gain buyer loyalty to its brand

Bristol has to implement a focused differentiation strategy. By implementing this strategy, there would be automatically a non-alignment in the 7-S considering that there would be a change in the infrastructure and organization of the school. This is the reason why appropriate measures should be taken on what to do before the school year 2007 begins. After which, how to do it is the next step and using the 8-SITS will be of great help.
