Abstract/Summary

This research used the mixed methods concurrent triangulation design (QUAN + QUAL) to determine the effectiveness of the Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) program in improving the counselors self-efficacy of the CPE students. The CPE Program included patient visitation, pastoral report/verbatim, group seminar, supervisory conference, and student responsibilities. The respondents in this study were the CPE students in Thailand. The daily schedule was from 8 am to 5 pm, Mondays to Fridays. The quasi experimental research, specifically, the one-group pretest-posttest design was employed in the quantitative study. The Counselor Activity Self-Efficacy Scale (CASES) was used in order to measure the level of self-efficacy of the 15 CPE students from the two CPE centers in Thailand. The t-test for correlated samples was used to determine any significant improvement of CPE students counseling self-efficacy after attending the program. All CPE students were interviewed for the qualitative study to enrich the understanding of the quantitative research. Findings from the quantitative study showed that there are significant improvements of the CPE participants in the three sub-domains of CASES; namely, basic helping skills, session management skills, and counseling challenges skills after attending the CPE program. The data also revealed a significant improvement in the overall level of CPE students counseling self-efficacy after their participation in the CPE program. Based on these findings, some recommendations were given for the improvement of the CPE program within the context of Thai culture, tradition, beliefs, etc. for further research.
