Abstract/Summary

This practicum project studies the theoretical and learn more the actual applications of Programmable Logic Controller (PLC), pressure controller and networking as control system in automation. Specifically, this is an analysis of a three-storey cargo elevator of Colgate-Palmolive Inc. (CPI) using PLC and an analysis of the booster pump controller of San Miguel Corporation (SMC) using pressure controller. In ICC broken wires that were previously installed to the system were pulled out. Work was done in wiring termination and loop and inputs and outputs that need to be controlled were checked. SMC provided ICC the Process and Instrumentation diagram and also the wiring diagram of the previous system for study and also served as reference for the rehabilitation of the gas booster pump. The installation of Honeywell transmitter and controller at SMC Booster pump 1, 2 and 3 was simultaneously done during the practicum. The hard part of the project was in the pulling-out of cable which were high voltage wires from conduit of voltage supply to the pump and the reinstallation of these cables from voltage supply to the three phase pumps. All the other activities of the practicum such as transmitter and controller installation, instrument wiring termination, configuring, calibrating, testing and commissioning, in addition to installation of reed switches to the door of the three-storey PLC-controlled elevator at Colgate-Palmolive, Inc. were executed.

The study on PLC Networking used in Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA/Distributed Control System (DCS) as applied in industry led the author to conclude that full knowledge on networking requires a strong background in data communication, local area network (LAN) and wide area network (WAN).
