Abstract/Summary

Math Proficiency Test I is an achievement test designed to assess the mathematical knowledge and skills which a first year high school student is expected to know and/or demonstrates. The content coverage of the test consisted of: whole numbers, factors and primes, rational numbers, ratio, proportion, percent, measurement, integers, graphs, geometry and algebra. The test which is composed of 50 items is in a multiple-choice item format. It takes an hour to finish. The table of test specifications of final form shows the number of items per content written to measure the designed outcome behaviors. To detect the technical defects, the item writers asked their professor and 12 colleagues to review and critique the items. After such process, 150 acceptable items were retained. These items were divided into three sets which represented the try-out test. The authors administered the tryout test to 48 second year students of Notre Dame of Greater Manila, Kalookan City. After test administration, checking and scoring of answer sheets and item analysis, 50 good items were retained. The 50 good items were chosen based on difficulty and discrimination indeces. They were arranged according to content and skills to be measured. The final form was normed to a random sample of 203 second year students from Notre Dame of Greater Manila, Kalookan City. The norm school was randomly selected from the list of CEM member schools in NCR. Mean and standard deviation were the basic statistics used to express raw scores in terms of Z-scores. The corresponding percentile equivalent was obtained from a table of areas in the normal distribution. Raw scores were then converted to normalized standard scores with a mean of 50 and a standard deviation of 10.
