Abstract/Summary

v. 1. This study presents a proposal for an organized guidance program for St. Bridget's Boys' High School. The deliberative method of research was used in this study. The data were taken from reading materials, and from the observations and experience of the researcher. The paper presented a list of the general and specific objectives of the proposed guidance program. To accomplish the objectives, the proposal provided the following guidance services : Personal Inventory Service, Information Service, Counseling Service, Follow-up Service, Placement Service, Referral Service, and Evaluation Service. The factors which determined the type of setup of the proposed guidance program were the administrative setup, the number of personnel, the physical facilities, and the financial status of the school. In the proposal, the responsibilities of the administrators, school staff and guidance counselor were spelled out. The study showed that the proposed guidance program was financially feasible. It was recommended that an in-service training program for teachers and a summer training program for the counselor be organized to promote professional growth. A Parent-Teacher Association should be organized to involve the parents in the education of their children. It was also suggested that the counselor devote time mainly for counseling work and coordinating the various guidance services. Priority should be given to personal inventory service, information service, and counseling service. Educational, vocational, and personal-social materials should be located in a place in the library for easy access. New standardized tests should be acquired and adequate facilities should be provided to make the proposed guidance service effective.

This study is undertaken to evaluate, through item analysis, the Otis-Lennon mental ability test, elementary II level, Form J, which is an American-made test, as a measure of the general mental ability of a sample of Filipino students. The test was administered to 284 Grade VI students enrolled at San Beda College, Grade School Department for the schoolyear 1971-72. The answer sheets were scored and ranked in order from highest to lowest. The top 27 percent and the bottom 27 percent of the scores were separated and used as the basis for the item analysis. The PH and the PL were computed by dividing the number of correct responses in each item of the high and low groups by the total number of papers in each group. With the use of PH and PL as points of reference, the difficulty and discrimination indices were obtained directly from the Fan Table. The effectiveness of the options were also examined. On the basis of the findings of item analysis, it was concluded that the OLMAT, elementary II Level, Form J, had 8 percent very easy items for the sample of Filipino students. It was also evident that the OLMAT was very good in discriminating the good students from the poor ones. Most of the items had options which were effective distractors, and these distractors were effective in attracting more respondents in the low group than in the high group. Overall, the OLMAT appeared to be a fairly well acceptable test. It was effective in discriminating the good students from the poor ones. However, it appeared to be less effective in discriminating students in the high group. To improve the test, it was necessary to revise the poor options of the items classified as below fair. One or two very difficult items were recommended to be included to increase the discriminating power of the test among the students in the high group. v. 3. Rudy is a typical provinciano who went to Manila to take up higher education in a private exclusive school. Although he managed to pass all his subjects in the first semester, he felt he was handicapped by difficulty in speaking English. His desire for change led him to seek the assistance of the counselor. In assisting the counselee, the counselor made use of the cumulative records and test results to get a better picture of the counselee and his problem. The cumulative records yielded valuable information regarding the intellectual ability of the counselee. The test results (Otis-Lennon Mental Ability Test, Adult Level, Form J and Sixteen Personality Factor Questionnaire.) provided confirmatory information of the counselees mental ability and an insight into his personality traits. In the counseling relationship itself, the counselor provided emphatic understanding and accepting atmosphere at the initial stages. He also directed or controlled communication. At the planning stage, the counselor and counselee agreed to use behavior modification techniques, specifically behavior contract, role-playing, and reinforcement. The charts, which were designed to record the counselees performance, show changes in the behavior of the counselee. The counselee showed a certain amount of self-confidence. He spoke English more audibly and clearly. He was more relaxed and at ease. These became possible because of the interest, determination and cooperation of the counselee.
