Abstract/Summary

Over the last five years, the Philippines has built a strong, highly efficient professional consulting services industry. Many Filipino consulting firms have developed a sufficiently large domestic base which enable them to handle consulting assignments abroad. These firms have been engaged as prime consultants, join venture partners or associates of international consultants for public and private sector projects in and outside of the Philippines. Many of these firms have also provided consultancy services for loan and technical assistance projects of various financial institutions such as the World Bank and the Asian Development Bank.

The consulting services provided by the industry range from engineering and architectural design, construction management and supervision, aerial and geological surveys, operations and maintenance, environmental impact assessment, pre-investment and feasibility studies to human resource training and development, executive and staff recruitment, quality managements systems, organizational development, accountancy, and software development.

There are several strengths or competitive advantages which have contributed to the development of a sufficient track record and capability of the industry. These strengths are the industrys large pool of trained professionals and specialists, the high proficiency in English, and lower consulting costs. These strengths have won for Filipino consultants a significant share of major consulting projects.

The increased export of consulting services is expected to contribute significantly to the countrys foreign exchange earnings and should generate much-needed recognition of the Filipino consulting profession worldwide. The industrys vision is to make the Philippines a world-class source of professional consulting services.

At present, Philippine Management Consultants shares the industrys vision by providing various trainings and seminars in the Philippines related to human resource management, trade, quality management systems, accountancy, legal management, other business and professional courses and even personal-development courses through public seminar and in-house trainings.

Based on the analyses of the external and internal environments, and overall strategy is formulated. Business objectives are set for the three-year period starting 1999, and detailed strategies for the different strategic business units and functions are developed.
