Abstract/Summary

v. 1. This study appraises the present guidance services of Sacred Heart College, surveys the prevalent problems of the students, and proposes a feasible organized guidance program for the college department of Sacred Heart College. The descriptive survey method was used in this study. The main instruments used for data gathering were the questionnaires, interviews, and personal observations. Books, periodicals, magazines, journals, and other printed materials, both published and unpublished, were also made use of. Two sets of questionnaires were employed. The first set contained the criteria for evaluating a school guidance program and the second set consisted of lists of categorized problems thought of as existing in the college. These questionnaires were addressed to the seven administrators composed of the Dean of Studies, Dean of College, Dean of Student Affairs, High School Principal, Assistant High School Principal, Elementary School Principal, Director of Guidance and 23 summer 1972 faculty of Sacred Heart College, a total of 30 respondents. The proposed guidance program took into consideration the present set-up of the college. In order that the program be minimally effective, the following services were recommended : information, group guidance, placement, follow-up and research, in addition to the three already existing services : the student inventory, counseling, and testing services, which needed to be improved, updated, expanded and strengthened. It was recommended that the proposed and recommended guidance program be put into full implementation and application. The guidance program should be made known to the students through the student's handbook, bulletin boards and conferences. It was also recommended that the professional counselor for the college students be on full-time basis. An orientation program and an in-service training should also be organized by the Director of Guidance for the instructors and the guidance staff. A clear-cut delineation of roles and functions should be provided

v. 2. This study is undertaken to appraise the screening system of Sacred Heart College. It investigates the predictive validity of the admission criteria given credence in the identification of applicants for entrance into college. It also aims to identify predictor variables which efficiently forecast academic performance. The subjects of this study were 208 Sacred Heart College freshmen for the school year 1971-72. The instruments used in this study were the Otis Self-Administering Tests of Mental Ability Form B and the College Achievement Test. The criterion used was the performance in college as measured by grade point averages. The College Achievement Test results, Intelligence Quotient scores and High School grade point averages were used as predictors. The variables were intercorrelated using the Pearson Product Correlation from a scatter diagram formula. The resulting matrix of intercorrelations was analyzed and interpreted. To discover the increase in predictability of the variables combined, the formula for finding the multiple regression coefficient was employed. Based on the findings of the study, it was concluded that the HSGPA and CAT have a positive substantial correlation with the CGPA which was significant at the .01 level. The IQ scores as measured by the Otis Self-Administering Test of Mental Ability did not correlate significantly with the criterion. It was evident that the HSGPA and the CAT were the best predictors of scholastic performance. It was recommended that the HSGPA and CAT should remain as the criteria for the school's selective admission. The prediction table should be utilized by the Admission Office and the Guidance Counselor for decision-making. Also, a follow-up study should be made for comparative purposes and to strengthen the findings of this study. A study on the reasons for the weak predictive validity of the IQ scores as measured by the Otis Self-Administering Test of Mental Ability should likewise be undertaken.

v. 3. In this study, an attempt was made to demonstrate what the school can offer to students experiencing emotional conflicts through its counseling service. Certainly, these students need professional help in handling their problems adequately. Maritess Reyes, a twenty-year old junior college student availed herself of the counselors help to know more of herself-her interest, abilities and personality. To answer her verbalized need, the counselor deemed it wise to administer first the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) and the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale (WIAS). The interpretation of these two tests paved the way towards counselees revelation of herself-her anxiety, conflicts coupled by her desire of overcoming it. In the counseling process, psychological tests, interviews with the counselee and her significant others and the observation of the counselor were the instruments utilized in gathering the data for a better understanding and resolving of the difficulties of Maritess. The core of Maritess problem was the strained relation with the sister-in-law and elder brothers, which occasioned her feelings of disturbing anxiety. These feelings of anxiety were often accompanied by cold sensations on hand and feet, warm facial sensations, hardening of stomach muscles and sometimes heaviness on head and difficulty in breathing. The counselee expressed two problem areas, which were related-the strained relationship with the sister-in-law and the experienced anxiety. To help Maritess work out and cope healthily with her problem, the counselor employed the aspects of insight-oriented counseling combined with behavioral counseling as framework of reference. The counselees need and personality determined to a large extent the techniques employed by the counselor. The counselor from the very start tried to build a therapeutic relationship by communicating to the counselee her unconditional positive regard emphatic understanding and congruence.
