Abstract/Summary
Ricardo has been referred to the guidance counselor by his class adviser in order to determine whether his consistently failing marks are due to some intellectual deficiency, emotional immaturity, or social inadequacy. Since he was in grade I up to the present time in Grade VI, he has been a borderline case, always at the brink of failure yet somehow managing to pass the grade with the help of numerous tutors engaged by his adoptive parents. However, some of his teachers think that he possesses the native capacity to accomplish the ordinary schoolwork if he tried hard enough. The general consensus of his teachers is that he is passive, uninterested, distracted and irresponsible. In this case, this study was meant to identify the multiple factors involved in the subjects inferior academic performance. What is Ricardo's level of adjustment intellectually, emotionally, and socially? How has the fact of his adoption affected Ricardo's personality? How do his adoptive parents attitude toward life, work, and child-rearing affect his personality? In order to ascertain the causes of Ricardo's poor achievement and lack of interest in academic work, steps were taken to assess his native capacity to learn. A series of psychological tests were administered to him. These tests were: Primary Mental Ability Test, ages 7-11 California Achievement Test Elementary Level Diagnostic Reading Rapport SRA Reading Record Laboratory IIa The California Tests of Mental Maturity Non-Language Multi-Mental Test House, Tree, Person Technique and the Sacks Sentence Completion Test. Interviews with the parents, teachers and the subject were also conducted.
