Abstract/Summary
This study determines the effectiveness of the self-enhancement program in enhancing the self-concept and self-esteem of selected boys whose mothers act as a solo parent. The time series quasi-experimental design was used. Convenient sampling was employed in the choice of 14 boys for the experimental group and of another 14 for the control group. The subjects of the study were 28 pupils from Marist, Marikina. They experienced father-absence for at least two years. The two-way repeated measures design was used to find the significant differences between the pretest-posttest results and the posttest-delayed posttest results of the 1) self-concept and 2) self-esteem profile of both groups. Two months after the program, the analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) was used. The findings showed that the control group showed enhancement in the self-concept profile of the respondents immediately after the program. When the delayed posttest was given in an ideal setting two months after, the control group showed stability in their self-concept and self-esteem profiles. It was concluded that the Self-Enhancement Program had the potential for improving the self-concept and self-esteem of the students. Behavioral changes were brought about by the learning gained by the students after they underwent the program. It is recommended that proper homogenous selection, test conditions, and time frame during the school year be done for the experimental group.
