Abstract/Summary
The study identified the significant correlates of, and analyzed the NCEE performance of the examinees of St. Michael College, Cantilan, Surigao del Sur, from 1981 to 1985. The following specific questions were raised in the resolution of the main problem: 1. What trend is manifested by the NCEE performance of the high school graduates of St. Michael College during the period 1981 to 1985 based on: 1.1 their overall NCEE performance, and 1.2 the hierarchical order of their performances in the four NCEE areas. Mathematical Ability, Reasoning Ability, Reading Comprehension and Verbal Ability? 2. What strengths and weaknesses of the graduates are revealed by their NCEE performance during the indicated five-year period? 3. Is there a significant relationship between the graduates overall NCEE performance and their 3.1 age 3.2 sex 3.3 high school overall academic achievement 3.4 class size 3.5 number of absences 3.6 faculty educational attainment, and 3.7 faculty years of teaching experience? 4. Is there a significant relationship between the set of independent variables: academic achievements in English, Mathematics, Social Studies, Science, Trigonometry. Population Education and the set of dependent variables, Verbal Ability, Reading Comprehension, Mathematical Ability and Reasoning Ability? 5. How may the graduates' overall NCEE performance be predicted on the basis of the combined effects of their age, sex, high school overall academic achievement, class size, number of class absences, faculty educational attainment and faculty years of teaching experience? 6. Which of the given independent variables are the best predictors of the students' NCEE performance? 7. What are the implications of the findings of the study for instructional management of the respondent school?
The study statistically tested if NCEE overall performance is independent of the following variables: students' age and sex, high school overall academic achievement, class size, number of absences, faculty educational attainment and faculty years of teaching experience. Likewise, it tested if NCEE area performances are independent of academic achievements in fourth year high school English, Mathematics, Social Studies, Science, Trigonometry and Population Education. The study employed the descriptive-correlational method of research. It examined recorded data on the NCEE performances of St. Michael College examinees in Cantilan, Surigao del Sur from 1981 to 1985 to identify performance trends and to discover the examinees' academic strengths and weaknesses. It likewise determined the relationship between the respondents' NCEE performances and selected intellective and non-intellective variables. The target respondents included two sets: 1) all the 587 NCEE examinees of St. Michael College from 1981 to 1985, for the analysis part of the study, and 2) the 232 examinees from the same respondent school selected by stratified random sampling, with sex and year of NCEE administration as strata. These respondents were used in the prediction part of the study.
