Abstract/Summary

This thesis determines whether Cristina Pantoja Hidalgo offers an alternative mode of discourse that would challenge the Western/Patriarchal system through her selected travel essays. Priscelina Patajo Legasto's concept of postcolonialism and Marjorie Evasco's feminism are used to analyze the six chosen texts. The analysis is divided into the three broad themes of Pantoja Hidalgo's travels: fascination, alienation, and reconsideration. This pattern, which resembles a journey, illustrates the travel writer's alignment with or against the West/Patriarchy. Furthermore, this study also centers on the symbolic act of traveling and establishes its significance in the plight of the Othered Filipina or the postcolonial woman.
