Abstract/Summary
In 1975, Laura Mulvey coined a new perspective on the female nude via the “male gaze”, a heterosexual objectifying gaze that relates pleasure in viewing women as spectacles and men as bearers of the gaze. In agreement with Mulvey, A. W. Eaton presented a comprehensive background on the problem of nudity on the objectified female nude in “What’s wrong with the (Female) Nude? A Feminist Perspective on Art and Pornography” (2012). While many have written about the female nude, little has been said about the objectification of the male nude and the circumstances surrounding its image and representations.
In an attempt to analyze the male nude and its place in the history of the nude and philosophy of art, this dissertation shall provide a feminist aesthetic 1 analysis. In evaluating male nudes in visual art, this dissertation provides a panoramic investigation as it primarily asks, “Are male nudes objectified?” or “How do we account for male nudes in visual arts?” This dissertation claims that male nudes are objectified while posing moral consequences: male nudes are hypersexualized and racially prejudiced. In proving this, this research employs the framework of A.W. Eaton and Martha Nussbaum.
