Abstract/Summary

The Study presents a miniature Automated Storage and Retrieval system (AS/RS). Automated Storage and Retrieval systems are miniature robots used in material handling and inventory maintenance. They usually keep track of the incoming and outgoing materials and store or release them as needed. The purpose of the miniature AS/RS is to demonstrate the principles of automated storage and retrieval for educational purposes. The AS/RS itself is composed of a curved 8 by 3 cabinet, a transporter and a computer for interfacing. Upon startup of the program, the robot is initialized to its home position and the main control window appears on the screen. The type of operation (storage or retrieval) is chosen by the user through the computer program. Once the operation is chosen, the transporter moves first along the x axis, then in the y axis and finally, in the z axis. After the operation, the robot goes back to its home position. All inventory entered or taken from the cabinet is recorded in the database linked to the program.
